The Story Of Kanturk Castle, Co. Cork Ireland

Friday, July 24th, 2009

“A man’s home is his castle…” so the saying says. Unfortunately in this case, it seems Kanturk Castle, County Cork, Ireland never became a home. Nevertheless, what did get built was and is awesome. The main edifice is made up of four story, while each tower reaches five story.

Today as you ramble around this fine old building, it’s hard to believe that it was raised in about 1601. 4 hundred years later and it is still standing strong. ‘Bualadh bos’ to the stone masons. (Bualadh bos is Irish/Gaelic for applause or praise) Legend tells that sStill stonemasons all named John erected the Castle. Hence at one time the Castle was known as “Carrig-na-Shane-Saor” i.e. The Rock of John the Mason.

There are different points of view on whom just the castle was built for. Some say it was MacDonogh MacCarthy, while others feel it was Dermot McOwen. Even the dating of the monument cannot be agreed upon. Generally it is believed to be late 16th century early 17th century.

Why was it that he never lived in it? Well, there is some more to that adage: ‘A man’s home is his castle …, yet that is, ‘until the Queen arrives’. The neighbors of Kanturk Castle were getting a bit bothered about the size of this building and to the intentions of its being. The Privy Council, which was like close counselors to the Queen of England at the time, was made aware of this and ordered the work on the building to stop. Consequently, ‘A man’s home is his castle until the queen arrives’.

So upset the overlord was, it’s reported that he smashed up the leaded glass and the tiles and threw them into the river.

Over time after that the possession changed ownership several times. Now it is managed by An Taisce – The National Trust for Ireland, since July 14th 2000.

Why not come and have a look at Kanturk Castle, Co. Cork, Ireland for yourself. As you walk around imagine existing in the 15/1600s with the Mc Donagh MacCarthy’s at Kanturk Castle.

Jeff Johnson’s Traffic Getting Plugin Killed My Site?

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

No, I’m not going to start badmouthing Jeff Johnson and dissing him like some insecure rapper. He has taught me an awful lot about search engine ranking and following his advice has helped me gain numerous top 10 rankings on Google.

When it comes to search engine optimisation he is one of the very top guys in the business. Just wanted to get that straight!

So having said all that why on earth would I accuse him (or rather his software) of killing my website? Well it’s just to prove a point really. The point being, never take anything for granted when it comes to SEM. Let me explain…

Over the last couple of years I have been embracing WordPress and have come to know the software intimately.

I used to always laugh at people who moaned and whinged on the forums saying their websites have been relegated to the supplemental results or they have been sandboxed. I would laugh because I have never had that problem with WordPress.

I would regularly see my brand-new WordPress blogs indexed and ranking in Google usually within days. This was the norm for me.

Then I decided to use Jeffs traffic getting plug-in to see if I could boost my WordPress blogs even more. So, excitedly, I installed and configured the plug-in on a brand-new blog of mine. I verified everything was working properly and waited for the amazing traffic getting results.

This was a good couple of months ago now and my poor WordPress blog is languishing in the sandbox or whatever you want to call it. Plenty of indexing going on but absolutely no rankings whatsoever.

Obviously before I jump to any conclusions about Jeff Johnson’s traffic getting plug-in I will need to wait a bit longer and keep building links in order to push the website out of the dark place it is in at the moment and I am hopeful that once I break out, this thing is going to drive serious amounts of traffic.

So even though Jeffs plug-in seems to have temporarily destroyed my rankings where usually I would have achieved almost immediate traffic the long-term results do look good.

So the answer to my question posed in the headline of this post would be a resounding no because my website is fully indexed and just poised waiting to explode! I expect the post will get a bit of attention in the blogosphere though!

Please do leave your comments below on your experiences with Jeff Johnson’s traffic getting plug-in.
