Water Proof Your Digital Camera With An Underwater Cover
Water proof digital cameras; the sort professionals use are very expensive and not normally used by casual photographers. Studying the life below the surface, underwater digital cameras are only normally within the realm of marine biologists and other nautical scientists. To be waterproof is to resist the water to certain levels, submerging it under the water to get the perfect shot is like throwing it out of the window expecting a pick-up truck to pass by and run over it.
The only way you are going to come close to taking proper underwater shots is by purchasing one of those little disposable units that can be used safely for about 50cm to 1 meter underwater.
You see water pressure is the real problem for these cameras as well as water leaks. A working option has been to manufacture a transparent plastic cover that holds the digital camera in place. These covers have been very popular, especially with people on holiday that want to take a few underwater snaps with their favorite digital camera.
There are a few things you need to be aware of if you are taking photos underwater.
If you have ever placed your hand in water and noticed how it looks different then you will understand light diffusion and this problem gets worse the deeper you go underwater. You will notice that images captured underwater are always darker and this is another thing you will notice is that underwater images always look as though the zoom has been used. To ensure the correct image will be taken you will have to pay a little more attention to the shot you are taking.
Before using your water proof digital camera, submerge the camera in the water first for several seconds then check if there are leaks through the cover, which will allow water to access the cover so look for this as well. It is also advisable to put a silica gel pack or two inside the cover of your underwater digital camera as long as they don’t disturb the camera’s operation.
If you have a chance you should try and fit additional lenses if at all possible to your underwater digital camera to increase the type of images you can take. The likes of macro lenses will allow taking close up pictures for example.
One problem with using an underwater digital camera is that if it is not rinsed off thoroughly, the salt can crystallize and cause leaks later on. It is not uncommon to experience the odd grain of sand getting into the cover which will cause problems later on so rinse the cover with a flow of clean water.
